The FN key was introduced mainly for laptops. The FN key gives the user shortcuts when pressed in combination with other keys, so the user doesn’t have to enter Control Panel or other applications for modifying the laptop settings. Nowadays, every laptop has this function, but the combination options differ from laptop to laptop.



For Toshiba laptops, here is the standard list of fn combination options:

Fn + F1 will blank the screen to prevent others from accessing your data

Fn + F2 -the Power Save Mode is displayed in a dialog box.

Fn + F3- Standby;

Fn + F4- Hibernation.

Fn + F5 to change the active display device;

Fn + F6 decreases the display brightness;

Fn + F7 increases the display brightness;

Fn + F8 to select which type of wireless communication you want to use; a dialog box will appear for you to select Bluetooth or Wireless LAN functions if both available.

Fn+F9 enables or disables the Touch Pad function.

Fn + F10 or Fn + F11 to access the integrated keypad. (when activated, the keys with gray markings on the bottom edge become numeric keypad keys (Fn + F11) or cursor control keys-F10);

Fn + F12 (ScrLock) to lock the cursor on a specific line.

Fn + ESC in a Windows environment turns sound on or off.

Fn + Enter to simulate Enter or the enhanced keyboard's numeric keypad.

Fn + Ctrl to simulate the enhanced keyboard's right Ctrl key.

Fn + space keys change the display resolution. Each time when you press these hot keys, the display resolution changes as follows: The available resolution depends on the model. With WXGA+, you can change the resolution between 800 × 600 and 1440 × 900 pixels. With WUXGA, between 800 × 600 and 1920 × 1200 pixels.

Fn+1 decreases the size of the icons on the desktop or in applications

Fn+2 increases the size of icons.



Many have encountered problems with the Toshiba laptop FN wireless button. As we stated before, the combination to change the wireless status is FN+F8.
